On today's episode of the Powerful Parenting Podcast, Stephanie talks with her son, Jude Blake, who is about to turn 18. It is the end of his 10th grade semester and he's looking forward to summer break. Jude shares how he realized that excessive gaming and content consumption have prevented him from pursuing his passions and having a stronger connection to his faith. Recognizing the need for change, Jude plans to unplug his PC throughout the summer.
Jude will also talk about the social and competitive aspects of modern gaming. He points to the rise of gaming influencers on platforms like Twitch and the allure of turning gaming into a career. However, he stresses that the chances of becoming a successful streamer are slim. You'll learn about the hypothesis that women tend to have "eye to eye" relationships, while men tend to have "shoulder to shoulder" relationships. Stephanie and her son will discuss the appeal of video games and how they provide a sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, and adrenaline rush. The conversation also explores the lack of similar opportunities for teamwork and goal-oriented activities in other aspects of life.
Jude then discusses how games can become addictive and replace a child's natural inclination for imaginative play. Expressing concern about young children having access to smartphones, Stephanie highlights their decision not to give Jude a phone until he turned 17. Jude will reflect on his experience of not having a phone and why he acknowledges that waiting to get a phone was an important part of his life and a positive experience.
Jude also mentions that he has numerous book ideas, including a children's book about a living river. However, he admits that his progress in writing the book has been hindered by the consumptive nature of gaming and what he recommends for parents to do.
Join Stephanie and Jude for an in-depth discussion about self-government and self-awareness, the value of failure as a learning opportunity, the victim mentality prevalent in the young generation, and healthy confrontations.
