How Intentional Parenting Keeps You Connected to Your Kids

I know that we can be a lot busy sometimes. With our businesses, careers, families...that we forgot about the thought of our final time here on earth. It's a sobering thought, right?

The days whizzing past, filled with to-do lists and emails, and somewhere in the blur, our kids are growing up.

Remember those first wobbly steps? Or the way their little hand fit perfectly in yours? Those moments felt like they'd stretch on forever. But then, one day you blink, and they're rolling their eyes at your jokes and asking for the car keys (terrifying, right?).

And somewhere in the back of that multitasking parent brain, a tiny voice whispers:

"Am I doing enough?”

“Am I really present?”

“Will they remember these years with a smile, or as a blur with me always on the sidelines?"

A subtle feeling of distance creeps in.

Suddenly, those deep connections start to feel a bit...stretched.

If this resonates, you're not alone.

Because there's a way to fight the "fade away."

The Fade Away Problem

You know those moments when it hits you?

The blur of carpools, meetings, and never-ending laundry, and then you catch a glimpse of your kid, the one who used to cling to your leg. They're taller, their voice sounds different, and they're engrossed in a world that sometimes feels like a foreign country. That's when it creeps in – the "fade away." It's not just them growing up (which is bittersweet enough); it's those little disconnects that widen the gap.

Suddenly, the kid who used to chatter nonstop now offers one-word answers. You realize you know their best friend's life story better than their own hopes and fears. The shared hobbies that used to fill your weekends get replaced with drop-offs and a nagging sense that their world is spinning, and you're on the sidelines.

And here's the scariest part: the "fade away" is sneaky. It's not a sudden break; it's missing one too many soccer games because "work got crazy." It's promising to play a board game and then getting engrossed in your phone instead. It's those once-treasured bedtime stories replaced by a hurried, "Goodnight, sleep tight."

Before you know it, the heart-to-heart chats have dwindled, the inside jokes feel rusty, and a quiet ache settles in because you're not sure when you became a supporting character in their story instead of a co-star.

Listen, this isn't about guilt. Parenting is a relentless marathon, not a leisurely stroll. We all have those days where survival is the goal, and that's okay. But the thing about those precious connections with our kids? They require more than just providing a roof and food on the table. They need our presence, not just our presents.

They need to know that even as their universe expands, we're still their safe haven.

That their victories and heartbreaks matter to us more than any work deadline. They need laughter that echoes through the house and shared memories that outlast any toy or gadget.

The beautiful, and maybe slightly terrifying, truth is that we don't get a rewind button.

The "fade away" can be fought, but it takes intention. It takes putting down the phone, stepping away from the to-do list, and truly seeing the amazing person our child is becoming.

Because the alternative?

Well, that's the kind of regret no parent should have to carry.

How to Stay Present in Your Family's Life

The hustle and bustle of our daily lives can create a dangerous sense of disconnect. Before we know it, we're "fading away." We become background figures in our own children's stories, mere providers instead of the vibrant, engaged parents we want to be. This gradual fading not only robs us of precious moments with our kids but also leaves them feeling less seen, heard, and deeply loved.

In my recent podcast with Dr. Caleb Braddock, a dad of four and successful entrepreneur, we delved into this all-too-common struggle. Dr. Caleb's honesty about his own moments of fading away was both refreshing and relatable. He shared how his journey as a parentpreneur has taught him the vital importance of intentional presence and fighting against the distractions that threaten to pull him from his family.

Here's the thing: while there's no magic switch to eliminate the chaos, we can make conscious choices to be more fully present in our family's lives.

Here are a few takeaways inspired by my conversation with Dr. Caleb:

● Quality over quantity: Short bursts of focused, undistracted time with your kids can be more meaningful than hours spent half-engaged. Put down the phone, turn off the notifications, and truly be there.

● The power of shared memories: Plan special experiences, no matter how small, that create lasting bonds. Simple adventures or family traditions become the cherished stories your children will carry with them.

● The dangers of the 'scroll' generation: Be mindful of your own technology habits and actively create screen-free zones to encourage deeper connection and meaningful conversation.

● Seek support and inspiration: Surround yourself with other parents who understand your challenges, and look to books, podcasts, and resources that offer encouragement and practical strategies.

The fight against fading away is ongoing.

Each day is a new opportunity to connect with our children.

Let's choose to be present – to truly see our kids, hear their hearts, and let them know they are the most important part of our world.
