Hashtag No Filter: Fostering Authentic Experiences for Kids Off the 'Gram

Whenever I watch my kids play with each other, I can't help but marvel at the simplicity of their joy. The way their laughter fills the room, untamed and infectious... like music without the need for any fine-tuning.

They're in their own little world, a kingdom where dragons are friends and the floor really is lava.

You know, times like these really show how magical our thoughts can be.

How our little ones can see a pile of pillows and, in a snap, it's a grand castle.

Or how a plain old box turns into a spaceship shooting off to the moon.

It's just so precious how they create whole adventures in their minds.

And us grown-ups? Sometimes we forget that kind of MAGIC.

So when my kids come running to me, faces beaming with pride over a Lego tower or a crayon masterpiece, I'm struck by a simple truth.

These are the moments that matter.

These unscripted, unplanned, perfectly imperfect moments.

However, there's a bit of a cloud that can hang over our kids' simple fun: all the social media that's everywhere.

With all those flawless photos and constant updates, it can make us all think we need to be a certain way. Our kids, and teens especially, who are still figuring out life, might feel like their fun and games aren't good enough if it's not 'Instagrammable' or 'TikTok-ready'.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-tech. It has its place.

But I often think about what our kids might be missing out on with all this digital stuff going on. The chase for likes, comments, and shares can be a heavy load for young ones, who really should only have to worry about carrying their backpacks, not all these online pressures.
So…how do we keep the simple magic of childhood alive for our kids in a world that's always looking through the lens of social media? The answer might be simpler than we think.

It starts with us…the parents.

In this blog, we're diving deep into the heart of parenting in the digital age. We're not just talking about setting screen time limits or banning apps. We’ll go deeper…to the very essence of what it means to NURTURE, GUIDE, and PROTECT our children's sense of self and joy.

So…roll up your sleeves and dive in.

Level Up Without Logging In

Flashback to the days when "tag" was a game you played outside, not something you did on Instagram. That's the world Jared and Camille crafted for their kiddos—less pixel, more playground.

In my latest podcast episode, I got to hang out with Jared and Camille, aka the parenting dream team! They popped by to spill the tea on their super cool parenting hacks, and let me tell you, it was a blast.

Their ideas? Pure gold!

They've got this rule: no social media for their kids until they reach a certain age.

Sure, we've all felt the temptation to give in—just hand over the tablet to calm a tantrum in the grocery store or to soothe the sibling squabbles on a long car ride. But Jared and Camille stand firm, and they've seen the fruits of their digital boundaries blossom into beautiful real-world experiences.

They believe—and I've got to say, I'm with them—that postponing the introduction of social media isn't about denial; it's about DELAY.

Delay for development.
Delay for deeper connections.
Delay for those dirt-under-the-fingernails kind of days that photos can never quite do justice.

It's a commitment to LETTING KIDS BE KIDS…in all their unfiltered glory. To foster imaginations that aren't boxed in by a screen. And sure, it's not without its challenges.

It takes creativity, patience, and a whole lot of active engagement, but isn't that what parenting is all about?

Smart Kids, Not Smartphones

In a world full of bleeps, messages, and digital dings, it's easy to forget that the brightest sparks of our kids' intelligence are often not tech-generated. According to recent findings, a significant chunk of time spent on social media might be nibbling away at our children's self-esteem.

So, what's the secret garden for growing a smart cookie?

Getting back to the basics—more ABCs, less LOLs. Let's replace virtual reality with the real, tangible, touch-it-smell-it-taste-it kind of learning. Think about the last time you saw a child's eyes light up at a new discovery they made, all on their own.

That's the REAL DEAL. That's brain food, right there.

We're talking about fostering a love for books that whisk them away to distant lands, encouraging curiosity through backyard bug hunts, and teaching them the stars aren't just for rating apps—they're for making wishes. It's about discussions at the dinner table that spiral into a family game of 'Did you know?'—minus the Google assist.

Raising smart kids in a smartphone world doesn't mean keeping them away from tech altogether.

It's about teaching them that there's a time to connect with the world online and a time to switch off, look up, and see the big, beautiful world around them. It's about balance, about nurturing those little neurons with experiences that no screen can give.

So, let's create a childhood that's rich with learning, laughter, and lots of love—the kind that doesn't need a battery.

And here's a little something from me to your family table: Dinner Questions! It's a curated list of fun, thought-provoking questions designed to ignite lively conversations and hearty laughs around your dinner. And it’s FREE!

Because the best things in life—the giggles, the stories, the 'aha!' moments—are priceless.

You Can Be Anything (Yes, Even Offline!)

One of the most striking moments from my chat with Jared and Camille was their passionate belief in inspiring kids beyond the digital landscape. Camille said it best: "We just want to inspire our kids to recognize that there are no limits to what they can do."

Isn't that just a breath of fresh air?

This is such a powerful take in a world where it's all too common for kids (and let's be honest, adults too) to think achievements are only valid when they're validated by likes or shares. In fact, long before social media, people achieved incredible things.

The Wright brothers took to the skies, Marie Curie unlocked the secrets of radioactivity, and Shakespeare penned words that would be recited for centuries. All of this happened OFFLINE.

When we create a space where kids can grow without needing an audience, we're telling them something important: Your worth isn't determined by a social media profile or a post.

We should encourage our kids to find satisfaction in the strokes of a paintbrush, the rhythm of a jump rope, or the resolve it takes to solve a puzzle—all done with the pure joy of the activity itself, not for the sake of showcasing it.

Striving for a goal without the weight of an audience's expectations is freedom in its purest form. The freedom to fail. To try again. And to succeed on one's own terms. When our children realize they can chase their passions without broadcasting them, they learn to value the journey as much as the destination.

So here's to raising kids who know their worth and can boldly step into their potential, free by the need for digital approval.

Here's to a future where our children aim high, not for the world to see, but for the thrill of seeing how far they can go.

And that, dear parents, is a journey worth taking — not just for our kids but for all of us, as we guide them there, one offline adventure at a time.

Camille's Take on TikTok's 'Cut-Off' Culture

Cutting off a family member is totally understandable in certain situations, especially when the relationship is toxic or harmful. But when I chatted with Camille, she dished out some seriously thought-provoking insights on how quick we are to declare 'game over' with family these days, egged on by what's trending on TikTok.

Camille shared that there's this victim mentality spreading fast messing with the way we handle our family issues. This mentality simplifies complex family dynamics into black and white, right and wrong, often ignoring the shades of grey where most of the truth usually lies.

Sure, standing up for yourself is necessary, but let's make sure we're not missing the forest for the trees.

Are we actually taking the easy way out by avoiding the tough, messy work of navigating family complexities?

Are we too quick to label ourselves as the wronged party and miss out on the chance to grow, to forgive, and perhaps to mend bridges that are actually worth saving?

We're definitely not here to say stick with harmful or abusive relationships — full stop.

What we're nudging towards is a more thoughtful way of dealing with family conflict. It's about asking ourselves...is this situation really beyond repair, or are we just shying away from a little discomfort that comes with working things out?

More importantly, this is not about us. It's for our kiddos as well.

They're learning from us. They're soaking up how we handle the tough stuff.

So, if we can show them how to face a little family friction without flipping the off switch, we're giving them tools for life. Tools to handle the rough patches without bailing at the first sign of trouble.

🤝 Let’s Break the Cycle 🤝

I always believe that we become the parents that we are in a lot of ways as a result of what we experienced as children. We carry tho
se memories, the good and the bad, into the way we raise our little ones.

And we know that the true essence of parenting isn't captured in those flawless, filtered images that flood our social media feeds.

It's in the scraped knees, the belly laughs, the pillow forts that collapse too soon, and the stories that meander without any real end.

That's why I'm all in on breaking the cycle.

Here's to being the parents who encourage our kids to live life unfiltered, to embrace the messiness, and to find joy in the real world.

And if you're with me…ready to craft a legacy of authentic, joyful experiences, I invite you to tune into a heart-to-heart I shared with Jared and Camille on my podcast.

Together, we peel back the layers of parenting in this digital age, sharing the heartfelt, the hilarious, and the honest truths about connecting with our kids, screen-free.

Grab your headphones and join us.

It's a conversation you won't want to miss! 💛
